Bornholmstrafikken A/S operates the the ferry services on the routes Rønne-Ystad and Rønne-Køge on a five-year contract with the Danish Transport Authority. The contract became effective in May 2005 and expires by the end of April 2010. Meanwhile the contract has been prolonged, and is now effective until the end of August 2011.
The contract includes navigation with four ferries: an express ferry, a conventional ferry and two freighters with passenger accommodation (RoPax- vessels).
In February 2009 a new contract was signed for the periods from 1 August 2011 untill the end of august 2017. The new contract has been agreed upon by the Danish Transport Authority and Nordic Ferry Services A/S owned by Bornholmstrafikken A/S and by Clipper-Group A/S. Nordic Ferry Services A/S and Clipper-Group A/S each have a 50 % ownership.
The new contract includes operation on the route Rønne-Ystad with a new, larger fast-ferry, supplemented with operations with the existing fast-ferry. On the route Rønne-Køge merely one of the existing RoPax-ferries will be used, but it will have received all necessary upgrades.
The contract is a net-cost-contract allowing the operator to keep the ticket-revenues. The Danish Transport Authority pays approximately DKK 185 mills. in annual contractual payments.
